The state of wood and its future

By Reid Lim of MeiSin-Furniture.com

From solid wood to plywood

Wood has been the material of choice for thousands of years since man felt the need to build furniture to store his belongings or to serve several functions.

In the bygone ages, solid hardwood has always been the material of choice in building furniture.

Before the invention of engineered plywood, carpenters in Singapore (and they still do in some undeveloped countries) have to shave off irregular logs of wood sawed fresh from trees to make wood blocks and tediously connect them together, to piece them into a more useful size.

Plywood has solved all such issues. Plywood comes into many different sizes, and many such sizes are big enough for a table top to be made. Plywood is often better than hardwood, in terms of weight, durability and anti warping.

We come to an age where everybody embraces plywood. Plywood is now the industrial standard for carpentry in Singapore.
