The future of wood use
By Reid Lim of MeiSin Furniture
The future of wood use The modern age sees the need to replace traditionally 'ecoadverse' wood with new green materials. With that is the advent of PVC wood, rubber wood and rice husk wood in Singapore. Technically, none of the above mentioned articles are true wood. PVC wood is made from polymers, as it name suggest and rubber wood is made from rubber, engineered to give it the density (as a matter of fact, much denser) of wood. Rice husk wood, sometimes abbreviated as FRC (Fibre Reinforced Composite) is made from rick husk (the shell that contains the rice we eat) mixed with various base chemicals. The main advantage of them, speaking from a commercial point of view, is that they are much much cheaper (20-70%). Another advantage is that they are "Green", as advocates like to portray them to be. However, disposing them would be a problem and any incineration of them produces toxic fumes much more hazardous than the CO2 produced when burning wood. Their main disadvantage is that they appear plastic (literally). Most renowned carpentry firms and designer studios shun it. They don't look, feel or smell like wood. Whether such materials can eventually replace wood is still yet to be seen, with reserves dwindling but still have almost a century more to last.

People have been trying to imitate wood for some time now. I used to have fun with the flooring that is made with a picture of wood and clicks together. Pergo is a company that makes this type of product. People would ask me what is the difference and I would stand in the middle of the isle and point to one side and say, "Artificial Christmas trees" them point to the other side of the same isle and say, "Real Christmas trees". I then stated a fact, "They have been making artificial Christmas trees for over 50 years now and yet people every year go out and buy a real tree. Why is that?". I then would shut up until they talked. Needless to say I sold more real wood floors than anyone else in the store.
